Phoenix Switch-On-The-Fly Chip (DISCOUNTINUED) (Disabled)
Power Hungry no longer sells the Phoenix/TS chip, but if you need custom tuning we can recommend a few really good tuners that will be able to still provide tuning and support for your chip.

If you have any other questions or comments about the Phoenix/TS chip, please post it here.

Default Loss of power and lots of black smoke!!

Hi guys I got a phoenix chip from PHP for my 01 7.3 in Oct and also installed DIY New stage 2 split shot injectors and a BB turbo. The truck ran awesome for about 2 1/2 months then I lost power and it started blowing tons of black smoke, it has black smoke coming out the tailpipe just crusing down the road and if I get on it I can just about block out the car behind me. I tried pulling the chip and some of the smoke went away but now it seems like it's back as bad as ever. I called Jim at Rosewood and he suggested I get the chip checked first to rule that out so I would like to send it back in and get it checked and reburned if needed. I tried calling and it says the phone no# is not in service. Or if anyone has any ideas what might be wrong? Ive got a CPR fuel system and adrenalin HPOP oil pump on it. Thanks Mike

Check the turbo wastegate, make sure it is not hanging open for some reason.

Other things that will cause this are.....
  • Warmup Valve stuck closed
  • Leaking exhaust up pipes
  • Boost leaks
  • Turbo failure

There are a few more things that will cause this, but these are the most common issues.

Good Luck!

My warm up valve has been removed,I have put on the bellowed up pipes(no leaks) I put the Diesel site intercooler boots all around and am still getting full boost on my gauge and it has done this with 2 different turbos (I had an oil leak and got replacement and had my stock one on while waiting for garrett to decide to replace it) So what else could it be? Have you checked ICP under load?

Low ICP will cause the fuel to be injected at a lower pressure and will not atomize correctly. This will give you an inefficient burn resulting in black smoke.

Borrow some type of scanner or make a mechanical gauge to check it. If it will not hold 2800-3000 psi more than likely your pump is weak, or you have an HPO leak.

I checked and at WOT it was above 2700 psi at a 40% duty cycle. Mike
