I'll be smog testing my truck this week since it's due in order to renew my registration this month. My goal is over 300 rwhp on stock injectors and stock HPOP, and still pass Colorado emissions with the same tune.

Results will be posted, win or lose.

Well, good news is I passed emissions. And surprisingly, I passed with flying colors. In fact, the numbers were slightly better than last year running on a bone stock tune.

Bad news is the guys at the shop were too backed up to let me make some dyno runs. So I have set up a session with them first thing Wednesday morning before they start getting customers in the shop.

Anyway, opacity numbers on the lug down test:

60 mph - 5% opacity
50 mph - 3% opacity
40 mph - 14% opacity
zero shift - 1% opacity

Last year the 60 mph opacity level was something like 10 or 12%, with the other numbers about the same.

This is with stock injectors, stock HPOP, regulated return, intake, exhaust, and 38R turbo. Guys at the shop were pretty impressed with how clean it ran and how much power it put out when they were driving it around the shop.

Hey Curtis pardon my ignorance but what does that opacity measure? Is it unburnt hydrocarbons maybe? I'm just curious...lol I know when I lived in Colo I always thought it was getting to be a Calif East with all the BS

Opacity testing here is just a measure of a beam of light passing through smoke. The higher the percentage, the more light is being blocked off.

No problem.

Here in CO with diesel testing, they don't really care what's in the smoke. They just test for how much smoke is coming out. The smoke cold be white, black, grey, whatever... they don't care. Just don't block off too much light and you'll pass.

The thing I hate though is the test is far less involved than testing a gasser. Yet emissions testing on a gasser is only $25, done every two years. A diesel is anywhere from $60-$90 (depending on the shop), and done every year. Freaking ripoff.

That surprises you? Heck, they get you at the pump AND testing.

The perils of owning a more "green" vehicle than a gasser.
