Default Is the 93 oct. custom performance worth the cash?

Currently my only custom tune is the 87 performance. I have an 07 Screw 5.4L with a K&N CAI and Flowmaster exhaust. I am getting about 14 MPG around town and about 17-18 on the highway. So my question is if I get the 93 performance tune will I get better gas mileage? Will I notice any change in performance? I know a lot of you have said you have seen a difference in mileage with the canned tunes. Any input would be appreciated.

X2 - but naturally I have to add to JHeppner's post!

Virtually every person who's tried the high octane tune has said he got more power and better gas mileage. If that's all you're interested in, fine - go to it.

If however, you are asking will the change be "worth" it, things get more complicated. Power, of course is something only you can judge, and if it makes you happy, it's all good. If though you are concerned about the extra cost of fuel and are trying to actually save money, you have to do some math.

I buy gas at Costco and regular here is $2.23 (right now). I'm pretty sure 91 octane is about $0.22 more. So using the price of regular as a baseline, 91 costs about 9.9% more to fill up. If your mileage improves by at least 10% at these prices, it would make sense to by the high priced stuff. Your highway mileage would need to be 18.7-19.8 to make that come true.

Can you get that much improvement? I don't know. I've never tried.

Thanks for the replies. I love my 87 tune and I can't imagine it getting any better. I just wanted some input from people who have both.

I am leaving for Myrtle Beach tomorrow, it's about 750 miles. This is going to be the first "long" trip that I have gone on with the Gryph. I will post my mileage when I return.

Thanks again!!!

I have Bill's 87 performance tune, and his 93 performance tune. my truck is very simmalar to yours, it's a '07 f150 xlt supercrew 5.4L 4x4. I gain about 1-1.5 mpg with the 93 tune over the 87 tune. not a huge jump in mpg but its something. but, in return for running 93 i get way better performance out of the truck. i mean like night and day differance in performance. when i got my tunes, i ran a couple of tanks of 87 to try them out, then i ran a tank of 93 to try that tune out...i've been running 93 ever since...

You say it quite well. You probably pay a little more for gas, but you get your money's with in enjoyment! Sometimes, that's what really counts!

Our 93 over here must be REALLY bad, my mileage went down after switching to 93. Played with the canned 87 tow and my average was about 15-17 even with gunning it a little. When I started using the canned 93 it went to 13-16. I drove the same places and drove like there was an egg under my foot. I also couldnt even get within a second of my 0-60's while using 87. Just switched back to the 87 tow that I played with and gonna see how that goes. If it still doesnt improve then I'll know its the gas.

well guys I just returned from my Beach trip. I ran the 87 perf tune the whole time. I got about 18 MPGs on the way down. I was cruzin' at about 70 MPH. I thought that was really good!!! On the way home I go about 16 MPGs goin about 75 to 80 MPH. My only problem that I ran into was, on the way home i noticed that when the torque converter would lock in, the truck shuddered like crazy. It did this for about 20 miles or so and then went away. Anyone have any idea of what that could have been?

Sounds like the lovely RXDE/RXDG shifting issue. There is in update on the server for you. See if this helps.

Thanks.
