Impressions

It seems to me that most posts here always have some mistake or negative posted to them...

This one will be totally opposite! :happy-dancing:

I just installed my 6 pos phoenix and here are my impressions:

Pos 1: Stock
-seems almost to accelerate a little better. I am assuming thats just my imagination.

Pos 2: 1000 rpm hi Idle
-What can I say, it does just that.Perfect

Pos 3: 45 hp tow
-I tried this tune last, it was obviously perkier than stock, but after trying the others, its definitely reserved for towing

Pos 4: 65 hp Tow
-This is the the amount of power these trucks should have come with. Not mind shattering, but it moves how you'd expect the big motor to push it. I have a JWVB and it shifts just like before the chip. (45 tow is the same shifting) I never really noticed how it shifted with the valve body until I tried the Pos 5...I do remember how much I hated the pre valve body shifting. It sucked.

Pos 5: 80 hp DD

OK, to be honest this was the second tune I tried...the first was hi idle. Shifting is amazing. The best of all the positions in that department. The throttle is docile till about 25% into it then it shows itself. No smoke, but good power. below 25% is feels like the truck is just running really good and light.
I took it out and hammered on it and it was zippy, just not crazy crazy. I immediatley started thinking, what's next on the upgrade list...Ported heads and the IDM to get the throttle response and low end boost up.

This is definitely going to be my DD position, Its a clean looking way to go fast.

Pos 6: 100 hp Perf

After trying the 80 dd, I had my fingers crossed for the 100 hp tune...and I was initially doubtful. I was thinking that my motor was just too stock to really see crazy gains. So I switched it to 6, punched it and heard that turbo spin and was sucked into my seat. Now thats more like it. It was docile when I let off the loud pedal.

So I thought, I need to check the smoke, to see how undercover I need to be to use this. I punched it again while looking in the mirror...And sure enough there was that locomotive tell tale! She definitely smokes and is moving.

This tune will be reserved for when I really need to get somewhere and who cares who sees. :whistle1:

So over all I am very very happy! PHP has made me a believer for sure. They delivered a perfect chip exactly how I wanted it (After Bill was kind enough to discuss with me what I needed) Great stuff!

Awesome!

It has begun.:D

fifity Sat, March 13th, 2010 09:16 PM

Tell me about it. I am looking for a spare set of heads and am about to order an IDM...
I should just look for a long block somewhere (I have an 02)

This was supposed to TOW the race cars..not become one.

907DAVE Sat, March 13th, 2010 11:20 PM

I think you would be better of looking for a spare engine. That way you will have plenty of spare parts just in case you need them.

What is your plan for the heads?

fifity Sat, March 13th, 2010 11:55 PM

Must finish minis...must finish mini's...must finish mini's....

Ok. I have decided...I am definitely going to do the swamps IDM, because people say it helps with that 0 mph slam on the go pedal response...

I will then do the adrenaline and eventually a GTP38R...

When I do the turbo, I will look for a set of heads to port match and polish out the intake side. As for the exhaust side, I will look at the exhaust manifolds and see how fugly they are, maybe open them up a bit and match the head to it. A little massaging to the exhaust ports definitly. Only to smoothen out flow though. I want to assist velocity and get that turbo spooling sooner.

I really would like to get my hands on a set of heads and exhaust manifolds..and a gasket set. Not alot of 7.3's out in my part of the woods...

Not to mention I haven't even thought about how much of a headache it is to R/R a set of heads

Look at me  My truck is probably twice as fast as it ever was...running great, I have had my chip in it for about 5 hours (which I love BTW) and I already want to make it spool faster...

I need help...professional help.

fifity Sun, March 14th, 2010 12:04 AM

Does the year of the Heads matter or will any 7.3 do?

Also on the block...Finding lots of early 90's 7.3...Obviously I would want a 2000-2001, but do any of the others come with goodies like the nice rods that I might want to check out....

I am incorrigible...

Actually the exhaust manifold ports are pretty big when compared to the head, at least a 1/4'' larger. Shoot me a PM if you want some pic's of my "big heads".

I have a spare set of heads and manifolds if you are interested, but shipping is gonna be a b*tch.

Sorry, I think I am the one that needs help.

I am a bad influence.:D

When I sent my PMR's Packing....Thru the side of my Block, I picked up a complete engine from a Salvage yard with Warrenty. My buddies dad an Insurance guy with allstate he was able to locate a few around me and tell me the milage and price of the engine. A carfax report from the vin on the engine confirmed the milage and for 2400 Bucks i walked away with a Complete 7.3 with Forged Rods and An engine warrenty.

Great review :thumbs up yellow:

fifity Sun, March 14th, 2010 05:57 PM

Wife just took a ride with me to costco... While driving there was a " :censored1: add non-PC comment here :censored1:" driver was swerving into my lane, so I mashed the pedal doing about 40... and shot off like a rocket. :happy-dancing:

The wife with a shocked look on her face said,"What did you do to the turbo?" and gave me the "how much did you spend" look.

Well she knows about the chip now... My CC now has an auditor :whistle1:

907DAVE Sun, March 14th, 2010 06:10 PM

:hehe: Too funny!

fifity Sun, March 14th, 2010 06:20 PM

yeah...I want to get an ICON Hanger kit with the adj track bar too to give me just a little more travel up front, but not sure if the wife is going to let me do that now...

Any ideas on a good place to order that through?

907DAVE Sun, March 14th, 2010 06:29 PM

IIRC they was a sponsor (trucktoysperformance) over here----->Powerstroke Nation - Powered by vBulletin that was selling ICON stuff.

Might check it out.

fifity Tue, March 16th, 2010 10:22 AM

Ok, got done with my first commute. It was early in the morning and I started it in stock, then dropped it into 1000rpm mode for the warm up.

When I was ready to go, the needle hadn't moved on the dash so I dropped it back to stop and pulled away.

I got to a stop light and saw that the temp was finally rising, so I switched it to 1000 rpm (in drive)...Truck almost pulled into the street :hehe:

Switched it to 45 tow for the drive to the freeway...and again it felt like the truck was light and running really good.

Got onto the freeway, which was a pleasant suprise. Not the normal lay on the gas and not a lot happens, there was a nice acceleration for the amount I pressed into it.

Got her up to 60 and switched it to 80 dd.
From there i noticed the truck responds to throttle input. Before it responded to throttle "movement". You had to move the throttle an inch or two before you would accelerate. Now you squeeze the throttle a little and the needle starts rising on the speedo!

Beautiful. There was traffic all over and we were doing 70, so I decided to just say screw it and cruise. After all, I hadn't had my coffee yet from the evil empire and I would hate to crash this thing when I just got it chipped.

So if there is anyone out there that doesn't tow super heavy, I'd recommend the settings I picked up. It is great yet still gives you the options of hooking up to something big when your buddies call.

Another couple days and I will have MPG reports...fingers crossed..my new to me ARE DCU camper shell ost me 1 mpg :cursin:

907DAVE Tue, March 16th, 2010 11:31 AM

Lost MPG's with the camper shell?

Glad to hear you are having fun with your "new" truck again.

fifity Tue, March 16th, 2010 01:13 PM

Yeah its one of the aluminum ARE commercial ones that sits 6 inches higher than the cab and has the aluminum frame on it for carrying crap:
Deluxe Commercial Unit Series Truck Caps : A.R.E. Truck Caps and Tonneau Covers

But having fun with the new power!!!

fifity Tue, March 16th, 2010 08:22 PM

Alright, driving the backroads today going home. Needless to say, where I work can be the wild west...quite literally.
I had it in the 80 dd mode and needed to floor it while doing about 15 mph (on slow acceleration on a recently turned green light) to avoid being T-boned (red lights mean nothing in some parts) Truck bogged down. Felt like it flooded or on a gasser, super retard of the ignition.

And as I do on gassers if this happens, I popped off the throttle and then jumped right back on. Slow spool up then the acceleration.

Will that IDM mod help me out with this? Also, will a 38r spool up noticeably faster?

907DAVE Tue, March 16th, 2010 09:09 PM

When you stabbed the throttle did it kick down a gear?

fifity Tue, March 16th, 2010 10:11 PM

I am trying to remember, but I think it still may have been in first

907DAVE Tue, March 16th, 2010 10:32 PM

Ever check things like fuel pressure under load, or for leaking up-pipes?

Once...but just trying to find the parts for a boost leak detector hopefully this weekend.

907DAVE Tue, March 16th, 2010 10:36 PM

Might be worth a try.

Hows the fuel filter lookin?

fifity Tue, March 16th, 2010 11:11 PM

uhhh. the new one is sitting on my counter waiting to go in...

Robert6401 Wed, March 17th, 2010 01:07 PM

Leaking up-pipes won't show using a boost-leak detector hooked up to the turbo, just fyi. Theoretically, you can hook the detector up to your exhaust pipe to check for a leak at the up-pipes, but I don't know anyone who has actually done it. I still reccomend building the detector, it is great for what it costs!

I am bringing this back from the dead. I just got back from a quick weekend trip with the missus. Drove from sea level to 10 and a half thousand feet, back to 5 thousand, then back up over the pass at 10.5 grand then back to sea level.

357 miles miles total. I averaged 14.5 on the flat part. Filled up at 6 thousand feet before starting the pass. If anyone knows the Sonora pass, they know it goes up to 10.5 grand and then comes down. A short drive at 15-27% grade the whole way.

Anyways, I kept the speed down because there was still snow and water (yes in june) and I got 15.7 mpg!!!!!

I couldnt believe it. Ok. well it was up and over the pass, about 50 miles of flats and then back over the pass.

I guess keeping it under 65 is the secret to mpg.

Anyways, it was an F-350, dually 4x4 with a big old high top ARE aluminum commercial camper, with only about 200 lbs worth of car camping gear...

907DAVE Thu, June 3rd, 2010 12:09 AM

Nice!

Slowing down a bit (55-60mph) has a HUGE affect on mileage in my truck. Suck's cause it takes longer to get anywhere, but sure is nice to see some kickass mileage when you get there.:D

cj45lc Thu, June 3rd, 2010 10:21 AM

That mpg sounds real good. I wish I could get some good figs on mine but I can't get the new to wear off yet. Guess that's why Cody says there is a learning curve w/these things.
