Gryphon Performance Questions?
Hello: I'm looking for a programmer for my 2002 Ford F-150 Supercrew with the 5.4 engine. I have decided on the Gryphon, but I have a few questions for everyone.
First off, is the Gryphon Programmers canned tunes, created with more performance than the Edge Evolutions or are they the same in performance? Everyone I have read post from are very happy with their custom tunes. Is there noticeable difference between them and the canned tunes on a stock equipped vehicle? Has anyone had a 91 Octane Tow Custom tune made for their F-150, and if so were you happy with it? I know I'm going to buy a Gryphon, just don't know if I need the custom tunes. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank For Your Time Sam |

Hi Sam - I'll try to answer your questions. My truck is basically stock too, so we should be close, however, your model Gryphon will be different than mine since your truck is a 2002.
The canned tunes in the Gryphon are identical to the ones in the Edge. PHP buys Edge's and "rebrands" them so they can be custom tuned. Bill WILL, however, make sure the firmware on the unit is completely up to date before sending it to you. The first tune I got from Bill (when I converted my Edge to a Gryphon) was a custom towing tune to replace the canned one. The canned one had improved my towing gas mileage around 1.5 - 2.0 mpg. The custom tune increased that by about 0.7 mpg (and I liked the way it felt too). I've never really considered having any tunes written for 91 octane gas. There is no reason why Bill cannot write one for towing though. I imagine you would be happy with it. People running custom tunes with 91 octane report better gas mileage than using the same tunes written for 87 octane. You have to decide if it's worth it to you. If, say, 91 octane gas costs 10% more than 87, do you get over 10% better gas mileage? I'll also say here that people who do have 91 octane tunes say their truck is "more fun" to drive (more power). I would suggest that you'd want two custom tunes. One for towing and one for non-towing (performance or economy - take your pick). Hope this was helpful, and welcome to the forum! - Jack
